The festival is being launched by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television with an aim to promote cultural exchange and cooperation among countries along the Silk Road.
It will be held annually and alternately by Shaanxi Province and Fujian Province.
Liu Bin, an official of Shaanxi Provincial Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, said the province has a long history and splendid culture. It is rich in natural resources and cultural heritage.
"A big number of Chinese and foreign film celebrities originated from Shaanxi, including well-known directors Wu Tianming, Zhang Yimou, Gu Changwei and film actress Gong Li," Liu said. "They have made outstanding contributions to Chinese cinema."
The five-day festival will feature screening of films from Silk Road nations, audience selection of excellent movies, film forum, film market and a Silk Road film themed concert.
