New media companies will get more extensively involved in domestic film production, distribution and marketing, officials said yesterday at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.Their ideas were outlined at the forum "Big Data: New Motivation of Chinese Films" which attracted owners of popular Chinese video websites.
They said that data analysis on customers, content and channels will wield a big influence on almost every aspect of the film industry, from script selection to casting decisions, shooting, marketing and sales.
Gong Yu, founder and CEO of iQiyi.com, has been inspired by Google\'s new application which can predict the box office success of movies based on search data with remarkable 94 percent accuracy. He plans to make several blockbuster movies after analyzing the data about Netizens\' tastes and demands for the cast, subject and story."We will invest in film projects with the biggest market potential," said Yu.
China\'s dominant Internet company Tencent is a co-investor with Huayi Brothers Media Corporation in films and TV series. Some of the movies are adapted from popular Chinese online novels which already have a large fan base.
The success of Netflix\'s original online political series House of Cards, directed by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey, has also boosted the confidence of Chinese video websites to create more of their own films and TV series.
Liu Chun, vice President of Sohu.com, said that originality is the foremost factor in achieving success, with big data analysis a good supplementary factor throughout the process of production and marketing.
