The China Movie Channel Media Award for new Chinese cinema held a grand opening ceremony at yesterday\'s 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.
A total of 16 new domestic productions, selected from several hundred candidates, will be screened during the festival. Among them are famous writer Guo Jingming\'s directorial debut Tiny Times, thriller film The Deadly Strands, comedy romance Love Is Beautiful and historical drama The Fall of Ming.
Based on Guo\'s best-selling series, Tiny Times centers on the lives of a group of people born in the 1980s and 1990s and reflects the struggles and sufferings experienced by the generation.
Guo said he had to face up to new challenges and learn as a film director to deal with any unforeseen circumstances during shooting. "However, there\'s something common between writing and directing," he added. "That is, a passion to record dreams and make dreams for people."
The Deadly Strands is about the dreadful truth behind a series of accidents around a celebrated radio host. All Apologies, directed by Emily Tang, is about the ethical dilemmas faced by two ordinary families after a disaster takes place. Award-winning mainland filmmaker Jia Zhangke is the film\'s art director.
Love Is Beautiful revolves around the romantic love story between a girl and her male roommate. The film\'s poetic sequences and music evokes audience nostalgia for youth and first love.
Set to the backdrop of the late Ming Dynasty, The Fall of Ming depicts how the dynasty ends, as well as the complicated humanity of people in turbulence and war.
The winning pictures will be selected based on the votes of the media audience and awards will be presented at a ceremony on June 22.
