The Chinese classic movies Crows and Sparrows and Beauty Road have been restored to their former glory after meticulous repair and will make their debut at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.
Their restoration has been made possible as a result of the sponsorship of luxury Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre in collaboration with 赌博app over the past 12 months.
A special screening of the two movies will be held at Shanghai Grand Cinema on June 19. The cinema will be decorated to evoke an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1930s and veteran actress Qin Yi, a star of the era, will be present to discuss the films.
In response to public demand, the festival will re-screen The River Flows to the East, Eight Thousand Li of Cloud and Moon and Cross Roads whose restoration was greeted enthusiastically by audiences last year.
The successes associated with these restorations prompted 赌博app to continue the project this year with Jaeger-LeCoultre.
Zheng Junli’s classic work Crows and Sparrows (1949) was chosen for restoration for its significance as his first independently-directed feature film and its sustained popularity. One senior fan said he had seen "the old film" many times.
“In spite of the blurred images and sound, I still appreciate the excellent performances by actors such as Zhao Dan, Sun Daolin, Tian Ji, Huang Zongying, Shangguan Yunzhu and so on," he said.
"The restoration could perhaps improve the film\'s intriguing details.”
Beauty Road was chosen for the significance of 103-year-old renowned master Chen Liting\'s depiction of an era\'s fierce declaration of independence.
Italian film restorer Laser S. Films continued the work on Crows and Sparrows and Beauty Road that it started in restoring Eight Thousand Li of Cloud and Moon and Cross Roads.
After restoration and several months of post-production, including captioning, the movies’ image definitions, black-and-white contrast, three-dimensional sense, and sound effects have been largely improved.
The ageing deterioration effects, such as white film flashes, have been removed.
Gala Premiere at Shanghai Grand Cinema
The two most recently restored films and the three from last year will be screened at Shanghai Grand Cinema. With this year’s ticket sales being so strong, up 20 percent on last year, some screening sessions of these old classics already have sold out. They have caught the attention of older film fans and lovers of old movies.
Shanghai Grand Cinema, 80-years-old and with plenty of history, is the ideally chosen venue to hold the grand “Classic Reproduction” opening ceremony on June 19 at which the two new restorations will premiere.
It will be decorated to replicate an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1930s, with large old posters, classy women wearing cheongsams, newsboys, flower girls, rickshaws and actors singing songs from classic old movies. Old memories will be evoked.
Qin Yi will join the audience on the night to watch the restored classics and recall the glory of old film artists. Qin Yi has said that life was depicted in great detail in the movies, giving an accurate depiction of social and living conditions. She hopes the films will help audiences appreciate the great efforts of the old Chinese film industry artists.
Project managing director Fu Wenxia said it was one of the few film restoration commissions initiated by an international film festival anywhere in the world. He said it not only fully embodied 赌博app\'s cultural responsibilities but also made it possible for more film fans to appreciate China’s magnificent film culture.
