Indian director Karan Gour\'s film Corrode won Best Feature Film prize in the Asian New Talent Award competition last night.
The film portrays Chhaya, a simple housewife living a happy and simple life with her husband Arvind until her eyes catch hold of an unfinished sculpture of the Hindu Goddess, Lakshmi. Her obsession to possess the sculpture becomes the only goal in her life and it influences her every thought and emotion.
"Without any doubt, Karan Gour will start a new wave for his generation in India. He knows the cinema very well, and he knows how he can use it to tell his stories," said the jury\'s award commendation on the firm.
The Best Director Award went to Chinese director Peng Lei, whose film Follow Follow tells a story based on his own experiences. It is a literary film reflecting the local pop culture scene in China.
"Besides the magical way he works with the non-actors to play themselves on screen, he uses music in Follow Follow to give voice to the feelings of his lost generation, hung without a place for their feet between the worlds of Western imports and their home country with its incredible base of roots," the jury said.
"For us, this young director represents one of the important talents and hopes for Chinese cinema today and tomorrow," the judges added.
"I\'m very happy. We\'ll work hard and contribute to the domestic film industry to make a film worthy of the Chinese," Peng said when accepting his award.
Big Blue Lake, directed by Jessey Tsang, won the Jury Prix Award. The film tells the story of Cheung Lai Yee who leaves her hometown to pursue a career in theatre but returns a few years later to find everything has changed.
The jury chose Big Blue Lake because the "director combined the lost city and the lost mother, who suffers from memory loss, to reveal a serious social and historical problem and leave it to question the younger generation."
The Asian New Talent Award aims to discover and support new Asian filmmakers. The international jury for this year\'s competition included Iranian director and screenwriter Amir Naderi, Chinese director Shangjun Cai, Korean film director Sung-ill Chung, Japanese director Sabu and Chinese actress Xu Fan.
