Being honest and just being yourself are qualities that acclaimed French director Jean-Jacques Annaud encouraged Chinese filmmakers to pursue during a cross-culture film lecture yesterday in Shanghai.
Annaud, who chairs the seven-member jury panel for the Gold Goblet Awards at the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival, hosted the "President Lecture" titled "Border-Crossing: the Possibility of Cross-Culture Co-production."
He was accompanied by Iranian filmmaker Amir Naderi, Japanese director SABU and Chinese film directors Huang Jianxin and Wang Quan\'an.
"I did most of my movies in English," said Annaud. "Now, it\'s difficult to make a movie just for one country. As for a director, he can benefit from the co-production mode because the movie will have easier access to the cinemas of other countries."
The celebrated director, whose credits include The Lover and The Name of the Rose, added that he always had a desire to know China better. He is working on a couple of new film projects to be made in China soon with Chinese producers. Among them is Wolf Totem which is based on a best-selling novel.
Annaud said although he has shot movies in many different countries, he never finds pressure in collaborating with local production teams. But he noted that a film director has to be honest, that is the film he presents must come from his heart to the audience.
"Also, he needs to stick to his own filmmaking style and personality," he added. "Film co-production is not a simple mixture of different cultural elements. It is important to be yourself."
Famed Chinese director Huang Jianxin noted that film co-production, now a prominent trend in the world film industry, should not be too profit-driven. "We expect more thought-provoking pictures which are related to universal problems facing mankind and can stir common human emotions," Huang said.
Iranian director Amir Naderi has made films in Japan and the United States and said that good and effective communication with co-producers and audiences can make things easy.
