Forum Told New Tech Products to Change Film Industry ModelsThe booming demand for film and video generated by new technology on mobile phones, the Internet and intelligent TVs will gradually change the worldwide movie production and distribution sectors, industry executives said yesterday.
The increasing use of mobile phones to watch movies came under the spotlight at the Shanghai International Film Festival forum called "Discovering the Blue Ocean: New Territory and New Media".
"New technologies have become a catalyst for innovation in film production and attracted many talented young directors, thanks to the low-costs and high-efficiency of new media distribution." said China Film Group\'s Zhao Haicheng.
Leading new technology firms, including Internet Video Website Tudou.com, one of the world\'s biggest phone company China Mobile, and handset giant Nokia showcased their new products to watch video on mobile phones.
More than 800 million people in China use mobile phones, making it the most popular approach to watch video, forum speakers said.
The Internet is another channel to show the great success in spreading movies.
Internet video business has become profitable and it is showing huge growth potential thanks to successful advertising models, said Victor Koo, CEO and President of Youku.com.
Koo\'s opinion was echoed by web network company Sohu\'s video division Chairman Liu Chun, who worked 18 years in traditional media before joining Sohu.
Liu Chunnin, Vice President of instant messaging provider (QQ) Tencent\'s video division, said video clips online will become more popular because of the increasing number of delivery channels, from intelligent TVs and laptops to tablet computers and mobile phones.
Tencent also announced a plan to invest more than 500 million RMB in new media sectors, including online video.
