Experts Give Master Class in Film DirectingTwo internationally celebrated directors and a screenwriter yesterday gave a master class on the director\'s role in movie making at Shanghai International Film Festival.
The discussion involving Hugh Hudson, Bille August and Greg Latter focused on the relationship between director and producer in which they believed the most important aspects were cooperation and communication.
The experts acknowledged that a director\'s job was very tough and physical.
Hudson, director of 1981 Oscar winning film Chariots of Fire, said that a good director would work with the producer on the budget, but not try to produce while directing.
"You should understand the budget and work on it with the producer." Hudson said.
August, a Danish director famous for Pelle the Conqueror and The Best Intentions, said it was best if the director and producer roles were taken by different people.
"The most important thing is that the producer and director agree on the film." he said.
Screenwriter Latter believed the producer should be careful about everyone\'s role, the director giving the film its tone and feeling and the story its dimension.
"The story can be told in so many different ways and every story requires a very specific identity or feeling." Latter said.
When Chinese films are screened overseas, language is always a problem and the common solutions are adding English subtitles, using dubbing or shooting the same scene twice in two languages.
But August said that repeating the same scene in two languages might be confusing for the actors.
The two directors finished off with a piece of advice for young filmmakers: expect to get love and joy out of the industry rather than fame and fortune.
