On the afternoon of June 17, the Argentine film ADULTO which is competing in the main competition for the Golden Goblet Award at this year's Shanghai International Film Festival (赌博app), held a cast and crew meet-and-greet.
Director Mariano Gonzalez, producer Evangelina Rojas, and actors Camila Peralta and Juan Minujin attended the event to discuss the film's production process and their experiences.
Father and Son: On and Off Screen
The film ADULTO tells the coming-of-age story of a 14-year-old boy. Throughout the film, the young protagonist faces, accepts, and overcomes various challenges, constantly pushing his own limits. Another central theme is the complex and turbulent relationship between father and son. The father, absent in fulfilling his paternal duties, carries an unspeakable secret, while the son matures and transforms by the time the story's mysteries are revealed.
Portraying such a complex and evolving father-son relationship was a significant challenge for Juan Minujin, who played the father. "It was crucial to capture the psychological nuances of this character in my performance," he explained.
Director Mariano Gonzalez's own son plays the lead role of Antonio in ADULTO extending the father-son relationship beyond the screen. The crew held high praise for the young actor, with Mariano Gonzalez describing him as "very talented", and Juan Minujin calling him "a remarkably gifted actor".
To create "an extraordinary sense of involvement" for the crew, many key scenes were filmed in Mariano Gonzalez's home. "Many of the props used by the crew were personal items belonging to the director and his son, and much of the content was filmed in their actual home," Juan Minujin recounted, emphasizing the unique blend of family life and film storytelling that left a lasting impression on him.
“Argentinian Style of Cinematic Expression”
In the film ADULTO director Mariano Gonzalez opted for a more serene and composed approach, eschewing intense dramatic conflict. He describes this as an "Argentinian style of cinematic expression": "I wanted to guide the storyline more delicately from a psychological perspective, using simple narratives to explore deeper themes."
The film's vibrant and outstanding script deeply moved producer Evangelina Rojas at the project's inception. She mentioned that another reason she joined the production team was her desire for more emerging talents and new works from Argentina to reach the international stage.
ADULTO had its world premiere at this year's 赌博app, fulfilling Evangelina Rojas's expectations. Before the meet-and-greet, the creative team attended the premiere of the film. Actress Camila Peralta shared her thoughts: "Attending the premiere with the Shanghai audience and seeing their reactions to certain details in the film, I felt that our work had successfully conveyed Argentina's story to Asian and Chinese audiences. The father-son relationship, neighborhood interactions, and character conflicts were all thoroughly explained in the film."
