The 26th Shanghai International Film Festival will be held from June 14 to 23.
Tran Anh Hung, who won the Best Director Award at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 2023 for THE TASTE OF THINGS will serve as the jury president at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival. The works of this Vietnamese French director and scriptwriter blend the expressions of Eastern and Western cultures, with sensitivity, delicacy, and a romantic style.
After being invited, Tran Anh Hung expressed his expectation to discuss the development of film as an art form with other judges and movie buffs in China at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival.
Born in Vietnam and living in France since 1975, Tran Anh Hung studied filmmaking in Paris at l’École Nationale Louis Lumière from 1985 to 1987. His feature directorial debut THE SCENT OF GREEN PAPAYA (1992) won him an international reputation by receiving the Award of the Youth French Film and the Golden Camera Award at the 46th Cannes Film Festival and the Best First Film Award at the 19th Cesar Awards. The film was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
His second feature film CYCLO (1995),starring Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-Wai is the gritty story of a struggling cyclo driver navigating the underworld of Ho Chi Minh City. The film won the Golden Lion Award for the Best Film at the 52nd Venice International Film Festival. Set in Vietnam, his next film, THE VERTICAL RAY OF THE SUN (2000), follows the lives of three sisters living in Hanoi. It marks his first collaboration with APSA winning cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-Bing.
His next feature film was the English language thriller I COME WITH THE RAIN (2009), starring Josh Hartnett. This was followed by the 2010 Japanese language adaptation of famous writer Haruki Murakami’s internationally acclaimed novel, NORWEGIAN WOOD. Starring Rinko Kikuchi and Kenichi Matsuyama, the film premiered in competition at the Venice International Film Festival before going on to be released internationally.
ETERNITY (2016), is an adaptation of the Alice Ferney novel L’Elegance des veuves (The Elegance of Widows), and it was his first French language film, starring Audrey Tautou, Berenice Bejo and Melanie Laurent. His most recent film THE TASTE OF THINGS won him the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.
Tran Anh Hung has a strong connection with the Shanghai International Film Festival. In June 2011, Tran Anh Hung served as a judge for the main competition unit of the 14th Shanghai International Film Festival and held a press conference for his film NORWEGIAN WOOD during the festival.
After thirteen years, we look forward to meeting the director in Shanghai and reuniting on the screen.
